Symptoms

There are 3 groups of Symptoms:

  • Disorganized
  • Lacking Focus
  • Having a hard time paying attention to details
  • Tendency to make careless mistakes. The work might be messy & may seem careless
  • Trouble staying on topic while talking
  • Not listening to others
  • Not following social rules
  • Forgetful about daily activities (e.g. missing appointments, skipping lunch)
  • Fidgety when seated
  • Getting up frequently to walk or run around
  • Running or climbing a lot when its not appropriate
  • Having trouble playing quietly or doing quiet hobbies
  • Always be “on the go”
  • Talk excessively
  • Impatience
  • Having a hard time waiting for their turn to talk or react
  • Blurt out answers before someone fineshes asking them a question
  • Frequently interrupting or intruding others. This often happens so much that it causes problems in social or work settings
  • Starting conversations of inappropriate times

Diagnosis

There is no simple test to determine ADHD. However, the therapist can make an accurate diagnosis after a detailed assessment. The assessment might include:

A physical examination which can help rule out other possible causes for symptoms

A series of interviews with the Child

Interview and reports form other significant people like school authorities, parents, etc.

To be diagnosed with child ADHD, a child must have 6 or more symptoms of inattentiveness, or 6 or more symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsiveness, for a minimum period of 6 months in atleast 2 different social settings.
